Protecting Our Police and Firefighter Pensions and Ensuring Accurate Water and Sewer Billing
A Request for More Detailed Audit Reporting This Year, with Independent Audits as the Preferred Long-Term Goal

Marco Island manages hundreds of millions of dollars in public funds, including approximately $75 million in police and firefighter pension assets and a Water and Sewer Enterprise Fund with a budget larger than the City’s general operating budget. Recent billing problems, differences in the financial condition of the two pension plans, and prior audit findings make it especially important that Council and residents have a clearer picture of how these major funds are being managed.
I am asking the City to strengthen this year’s audit by requiring more detailed, separately reported sections for the Police Officers’ Pension Plan, Firefighters’ Pension Plan, and Water and Sewer Enterprise Fund, along with expanded testing of water and sewer billing and accounting controls. Longer term, I believe the City should consider fully standalone independent audits of these funds. The goal is simple: identify problems early, protect the retirement security our police officers and firefighters have earned, and make sure residents and businesses are billed accurately and fairly.
